How do I get my rat to trust me?
I got a new baby girl about 2 months ago, mama, that I saved from being rat food. I could tell she liked me right away because of how she reacted when I was holding her. A few days later I noticed she had scabs under her chin so I looked it up and decided that it was from her nails being too long so I cut them and I accidentally made her bleed, poor ratty I know and I feel terrible and will NEVER do it again. Anyway the next day I was holding a different one of my rats and I noticed him scratching and looked closer and I noticed he had lice which he got from mama. As a part of their treatment all received an oil bath which none of them were happy with. A few days later my sister (her other mom) went to get her out of her cage and she jumped up and bit her finger hard. I managed to get her out of the cage without biting me and we just decided that she was scared because of all we had done to her and that she will get used to us and become a fine addition to our rat family. Since then she seemed to be getting more used to us and more trusting. Today I realized that she is pregnant and probably due in about 2 weeks. I went to take her out of her cage and she bit me so hard she drew a lot of blood. I got so mad I considered getting rid of her but my sister convinced me to give her another chance. So my question is now that she is pregnant how do we get her to trust us and how do we get her to stop biting? Is she more defensive because she is pregnant? Its so hard for me to trust her and I don’t want a rat that I am scared to get out of their cage or one who doesn’t trust me or is scared of me. I find she is very up and down personality wise also. She’ll be happy chattering her teeth but then she’ll be scared when we pet her or go to pick her up she’ll squeak when out of the cage.
@Burrito I know what I am doing when it comes to rats being that I have owned many during my life. I also know all about the pregnancy process being that I have already had a rat have babies once before (it was an accident, not intentional) Therefor I know that they can get pregnant within 24 hours after giving birth and all of the other obvious things you mentioned. I have 5 rats the mom and dad of the previous litter and a baby boy and a baby girl if theirs and then I have mama. The reason she is alone is because I saved her from being fed thinking that I will quarantine her and then move her in with the other girls. I did notice that she was in heat and I did mate her with my boy rat because I was confident in what I was doing. Also when she but my sister she was not pregnant because this was before I had mated them. I do thank you all for your advice and I will continue to work on it. I do hold her everyday and try to stay away from her cage for now.
